About 15 million people in the United States experience heartburn daily. For those of you who get heartburn at night—nearly 8 out of 10 heartburn sufferers do—there’s a reason why and options to reduce it. Lying down makes it easier for stomach acids to splash up into our esophagus. This has happened to me and it can be difficult to fall asleep. So, what’s a person to do?

· To keep acid down, place an extra pillow or two under your shoulders or try sleeping on your side.
· Avoid going to bed with a full stomach; try to eat at least two to three hours before bedtime
· Some foods—chocolate, coffee, citrus fruits, fried and spicy foods—can trigger heartburn and avoiding them in the evening may help
· Avoid a workout right before bedtime; exercise can actually cause heartburn
· Keep your meals small and eat frequently; overeating is a common cause of heartburn
· Alcohol can trigger heartburn, so avoiding it or only having it with dinner could reduce heartburn
· Excess body weight adds pressure on the valve at the top of the stomach; dropping weight can help in alleviating heartburn
· Smoking is a leading cause of heartburn; if you do smoke, try quitting to ease heartburn
· After dinner mints may relax the valve at the top of the stomach, which then causes heartburn…so, avoid after-dinner mints
· Try to pinpoint which foods trigger your heartburn; keep a diary of the foods you eat
· Wear loose-fitting sleepwear
· Chew gum! Chewing non-mint, sugarless gum for 30 minutes after a meal reduces the risk of heartburn
