There is a link between daily growth and sleep. Findings from the first study of its kind, researchers have found that growth spurts are tied to an increase in total daily hours of sleep as well as an increase in the number of daily sleep bouts.
Published in the journal Sleep, researchers found that sleep predicts a growth spurt in length as well as an increase in weight and abdominal fat, implying an anabolic process of growth.
Further, the study showed differences in sleep patterns related to growth depending on the baby’s gender. In general, boys in the study exhibited more sleep bouts and shorter sleep bouts than girls. According to Dr. Michelle Lampl, a professor of anthropology at Emory University and associate director at Emory/Georgia Tech Predictive Health Institute, “Our data open the window to further scientific study of the mechanisms and pathways that underlie salutatory growth.”
Of course, we all know that grandma was onto something, right?
