Americans Believe Their Bedroom is Key to Good Sleep—Still Only 42% Regularly Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Just this week, the National Sleep Foundation released results from the first ever Bedroom Poll. What they learned is interesting…unless of course you LOVE your bedroom already. The poll found that Americans love their bedrooms and believe that comfort and cleanliness are fundamental to good sleep.

Nine out of ten Americans say that mattresses and pillows are important to getting a good night’s sleep. More than 75% of Americans also believe that the feel of sheets and bedding are important. The temperature, darkness and cleanliness of the room rank high too.

However, only about four in ten Americans (42%) are “great sleepers” who say they get a good night’s sleep every night or almost every night.

What’s the difference between those “great sleepers” and the other six out of ten Americans who only gets a good night’s sleep a few nights a week or less? Great sleepers say they sleep on average about an hour longer than other groups.

On weekdays, great sleepers say they sleep an average of seven hours and nine minutes compared to an average sleep time of six hours and two minutes. Even on weekends, great sleepers say they say they get more sleep.

David Cloud, the CEO of the National Sleep Foundation, said, “Love your bedroom and make it the best place you can. But at the end of the day, it’s crucial to give yourself enough time to wind down and get the seven to nine hours of sleep that most people need to feel their healthiest and best.”

The National Sleep Foundation provides advice for getting good sleep including sticking to a sleep schedule, exercising regularly, establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, avoiding caffeinated and alcoholic beverages at night, and others. Check out their press release.
