The Des Moines Register published an article on January 14 about snoring and the impact it has on the snorer’s bed partner. According to Dr. Greg Hicklin, who is the medical director of a West Des Moines sleep center, “Simple snoring is not a problem for the snorer; it’s a problem for the bed partner.”
When a spouse’s health suffers because of his or her partner’s snoring, it can lead to marital strife. Many couples end up having more arguments because one or both are simply more tired or they end up sleeping in different rooms and don’t want to be.
If you and your bed partner are in this situation, it may be time to see a sleep doctor. According to the article, sleep apnea is a life-threatening condition and should be treated…but simple snoring can be treated too.
When to see a sleep doctor:
- Snore nightly and feel sleepy during the day
- Snore and fall asleep at inappropriate times
- Stop breathing, gasp or choke during sleep
