Traveling With a CPAP

Since 9-11, luggage you can carry onto an airplane has been reduced to one with a personal bag. A sleep apnea therapy device or CPAP is considered a medical device and may count as one of your carry-on pieces. Never check a sleep apnea therapy device with your baggage as it can be damaged through normal luggage handling procedures.

Understand What is Needed to Travel With Your CPAP
Your doctor can provide you with a letter stating your diagnosis and the need to carry your device with you, if necessary.  This is a good idea even when traveling with Transcend, which is small enough to pack into your carry-on rather than be a carry-on. Also, each airline is different regarding its policies so be sure to call in advance to clarify procedures and in-flight policies.

Another valuable step to take is to review the Fact Sheet provided by the Department of Transportation called “Steps Taken to Ensure New Security Requirements Preserve and Respect the Civil Rights of People with Disabilities.”
