How Sleep Plays a Role in Testosterone Levels in Young Men

There’s more to testosterone than bulging muscles. While it is critical in building muscle mass and bone density, very low testosterone levels is associated with low energy, reduced libido, poor concentration and fatigue.

In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers compared testosterone levels in a group of healthy young men after a week of normal sleep and a week of sleep loss.  During the first week, the participants slept eight hours each night at home, followed by three nights of 10 hours of sleep and eight nights of five hours of sleep.

Results showed that testosterone levels decreased by 10-15% after the week of sleep loss as compared to the nights the participants had more sleep. So many folks miss out on getting a full eight hours of sleep each night. Men, especially young men, may want to pay attention to this. Not getting enough sleep could have a negative impact on them and their well-being.
