Why Transcend is the Ultimate Travel CPAP

In designing Transcend, Somnetics engineers talked with sleep apnea patients about the biggest hassles of traveling with a conventional CPAP. Want to know what they learned? If you’ve traveled with a CPAP, you can probably answer that question faster than I can type.

The most prevalent hassle? The CPAP, humidifier and hose are cumbersome and bulky to pack and carry. Finding a power outlet in a hotel room that is close to the bed is also a common problem. We’ve heard stories from patients who pack a long extension cord just so they can power their CPAP from an outlet in the motel bathroom! And, if you travel by air, getting through security with a CPAP can be a major hassle. TSA will ask you to take out the CPAP so they can examine it. Other interesting stories we heard were from folks who went to great lengths to pack their CPAP and a huge battery to backpack in the mountains. That’s impressive and tiring at the same time.

Somnetics engineers realized that a smaller, lighter and more portable CPAP could be the solution to many of these hassles. That’s the premise for Transcend. The features that make Transcend the ultimate travel CPAP include:

  • Small size. Transcend is the smallest, most portable CPAP available. It actually measures just 6.1 in x 3.5 in x 2.8 in.
  • Lightweight. Transcend weighs less than 1 lb. Have you ever picked up a 1 lb bag of coffee beans? Transcend is lighter. In fact, Transcend is the lightest CPAP on the market.
  • HME Technology. Transcend uses a small, hygienic heat moisture exchanger (HME) instead of a water chamber for humidification. We described how this works in more detail in the June 2 blog post, but essentially the HME works by capturing heat and moisture from your exhaled air. On inhalation, that warm, moist air is transferred back to you, keeping your nose and mouth comfortable.
  • Short Hose. Transcend’s hose is about 9 inches long from blower to mask. A huge amount of space is saved when there’s no six-foot hose to pack!
  • Low Power Consumption. Transcend doesn’t need a lot of power. A big reason for this is that the HME does not require heating like a water chamber. Transcend can also be powered by battery pack and mobile power options, so you can use it in remote locations.
  • Universal AC. Transcend’s universal AC power supply automatically converts power current outside the United States.
  • High Altitude Use. Transcend automatically compensates therapy pressure to altitudes of up to 8,000 feet
  • FAA Compliant. Transcend meets electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for use on board an aircraft.

Transcend is a perfectly integrated system that can be packed into a travel case the size of a men’s toiletry bag. Instead of being a carry-on, Transcend fits into your carry-on. How cool is that?
