Ten Most Common Problems Adjusting to Using a CPAP

According to the Mayo Clinic, common problems associated with using a CPAP machine include a leaky mask, trouble falling asleep, and a dry mouth or nose. Fortunately, there are many options now available if your current mask leaks or doesn’t fit well. Here’s the full list of 10 most common problems as found on the Mayo Clinic website:

  1. The wrong size or style of CPAP mask
  2. Trouble getting used to wearing the CPAP mask/using the device
  3. Difficulty tolerating forced air
  4. Dry, stuffy nose
  5. Feeling claustrophobic
  6. Leaky mask, skin irritation or pressure sores
  7. Difficulty falling asleep
  8. Dry mouth
  9. Unintentionally removing the mask during the night
  10. Annoyed by the noise

Time and patience are the keys to overcoming these problems. Sticking with it and seeking out advice from others will help in adjusting to a CPAP device and mask. It could take several months to find the best settings and to adapt to the mask and forced air. But, in the end, the treatment will help patients avoid sleep apnea-related issues.

What tips do you have for new CPAP users adjusting to the mask and device? Post your comments and I’ll include them in a future blog. Thanks.
